Waldo Knight lives in a village among the lush rolling hills and
beaches of northern New South Wales, Australia. Born and raised
in Sydney, he practised as a legal aid lawyer for some years. After a
leave of absence in France, Nepal and India he retired from the law
to pursue writing and music full time. He returned to the
Sub-Continent, taking up residence in Nepal. He enrolled at
Tribhuvan University to study Nepali. Introduced by friends to
Ram Hari Gurung, an Indian classical music teacher, he undertook
lessons, learning ragas on guitar. After three years abroad he
returned to Australia and set about writing the songs which would
become the Aftermath album. He has gigged in France, Kathmandu
and Australia. Aftermath was recorded on a two input digital
recorder in a studio he built in his backyard. |

Aftermath was recorded over four years from 2001 to 2005.
Lyrically it is the journey of a soul into the abyss and halfway up
the mountain. Songs that live between the dark night of the soul
and glimpses of salvation. Percussive and pulsing acoustic folk,
atmospheric finger picking, sweetly savage electric guitar solos,
Ganges delta blues and celtic rhythms.Aftermath is an album of its
own genre. |

Waldo Knight's CD, "Aftermath", feels like a spiritual musical
journey by an artist who has run full circle in life - and seems to
have landed in an instinctive and pure place. The 10-tune CD is a
journey through several stages of his experience. "Sweet Vaporous
Kiss" has a religious-chant-like quality to the post chorus phonetic
harmonies - nice. Track 2, "Glimpses", gives the first taste of the
timbre of Knight's textured voice and intimate vocal delivery. He is
able to combine deft songwriting ability with an undeniable
sincerity. We are reminded of Al Stewart in story telling and tone,
and early Peter Gabriel in arrangements and approach. The tune is
at once melodic and at once an exercise of prose. The melody of
the chorus resolves the conflict and uncertainty of the first three
minutes of the song - painting message and emotion perfectly.
"God and the Devil" seems to call upon the ghost finger-picking
slide of acoustic southern guitar blues. Waldo asks, 'do you really
want be a king in the kingdom of pain?'. "Kathleen" is a gorgeous
guitar/vocal bare beauty. We hear glimpses of Richard Harris and if
you understand that comparison we're all much too old. Great
record from Waldo Knight. - EARBUZZ |
